ISO 9044:1999 (Industrial woven wire cloth — Technical requirements and tests) is one of the most authoritative international standards in the woven wire mesh field, broadly equivalent to China's GB/T 5330-2003. Its core provisions cover: aperture definition and tolerance grades, wire diameter allowances, open area percentage (OA%) calculation, and mesh flatness requirements.
Key Parameter Definitions
Aperture (w)
The aperture is the clear distance between two adjacent parallel wires, calculated as:
w = p - d
where p is the pitch (center-to-center distance between adjacent wires) and d is the wire diameter.
Mesh Count and Pitch
Mesh count is the number of openings per 25.4 mm (1 inch). Pitch is derived as:
p = 25.4 / Mesh
Example — 20 mesh, wire diameter 0.4 mm: p = 1.27 mm, w = 0.87 mm
Open Area (OA%)
OA% = (w / (w + d))² × 100
ISO 9044 Aperture Tolerance Grades
| Grade | Typical Application | Aperture Tolerance |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Industrial guarding, primary filtration | ±10–15% |
| Precision | Particle classification, food screening | ±5–8% |
| Ultra-precision | Test sieves, laboratory analysis | ±3–5% |
What a Compliant Test Report Should Include
A test report conforming to ISO 9044 should clearly state:
- Material designation — e.g., SUS304 (1.4301) or SUS316L (1.4404)
- Nominal aperture and measured aperture (average of 5-point sampling)
- Nominal wire diameter and measured wire diameter
- Weave type — Plain Weave or Twill Weave
- Applicable standard — ISO 9044:1999 or GB/T 5330-2003
Practical Selection Guidelines
- High separation accuracy required: Specify the Precision grade and require per-batch test data from your supplier.
- Filtration applications: Select an aperture approximately 0.8–1.0× the D90 of the target particle size.
- Heavy-duty wear applications: Prioritize a larger wire diameter — even at the cost of reduced open area, the gain in service life is substantial.
- Corrosive environments: Where aperture requirements are met, specify 316L with PREN ≥ 24.
