65Mn Manganese Steel Mesh vs Stainless Steel Woven Mesh: Material Selection Logic for Mining Screen Applications

65Mn spring steel and stainless steel are the two most common materials in industrial screening. Differences in wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and lifecycle cost define where each material belongs. This article uses real operating data to help you make the right call.

Scope & Limitations

Intended for initial material selection between 65Mn / SUS304 / SUS316L in mining, aggregate, and general industrial filtration applications. Actual corrosive media, food-grade certification requirements, and high-temperature conditions must still be verified against site-specific parameters.

Where 65Mn Manganese Steel Mesh Belongs

65Mn (conforming to GB/T 1222-2016) is the go-to choice for dry mining and aggregate screening. Optimal applications include coarse, medium, and fine classification of hard aggregates such as limestone, basalt, and granite, with aperture sizes ranging from 5 to 120 mm in dry vibrating screen operation. Its high hardness (HRC 45–50) and high elastic modulus make it highly fatigue-resistant under high-frequency impact, delivering 2–3× the service life of standard carbon steel mesh.

Avoid using 65Mn in: acidic or chloride-bearing wet environments, operating temperatures above 200°C, or any application requiring food-grade certification.

Where Stainless Steel Woven Mesh Belongs

SUS304 suits general water treatment filtration, food and grain screening, and chemical liquid filtration. With a pitting resistance equivalent (PREN) of approximately 18, it handles most weak acids and alkalis reliably.

SUS316L is the right choice for acidic coal slurry dewatering in coal preparation plants, coastal installations, and pharmaceutical or food export applications requiring stringent certifications. The addition of 2–3% molybdenum raises PREN to approximately 24–26, providing significantly better resistance to chloride-induced pitting.

Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Analysis

Based on a vibrating screen deck configuration (20 mm aperture, 6 m² panel area):

OptionUnit Purchase CostReplacement IntervalAnnualized Cost
Standard carbon steel mesh~¥8002 months¥4,800
65Mn manganese steel mesh~¥1,5005–6 months¥3,000
SUS304 stainless mesh~¥2,2008–10 months¥2,640

Decision Tree

Is there a corrosive medium present (acids, alkalis, chloride-bearing liquids)? ├── Yes → Choose stainless steel (316L preferred over 304) └── No → Is this high-impact dry aggregate screening? ├── Yes → Choose 65Mn (best cost performance) └── No → Select 304 based on temperature tolerance and precision requirements
